For Varalakshmi Vratham, wear red, yellow, pink or maroon. Those are the colours read as Lakshmi's, and they are what most households expect on the day. Varalakshmi Vratham 2026 falls on Friday, 21 August in most panchangs, though some families observe it on Friday, 28 August.
Colour is the easy part. The harder question is which fabric survives four hours of sitting near a lit lamp in August.
Varalakshmi Vratham 2026: 21 August, and why some say 28
The rule is the last Friday of Shravana before the full moon. Shravana Purnima in 2026 falls on Saturday, 29 August, which puts the Friday before it on 21 August. That is the date most sources carry. A smaller set of calendars lists 28 August instead, reading the rule as the Friday closest to Purnima rather than the one preceding it.
Both readings have tradition behind them. Go by what your family or your local temple follows rather than what a search result tells you, because in most South Indian households this is already settled by whoever has always settled it.
The colours that work, and the two to leave alone
Red is the most common choice, then yellow, then pink. Maroon works well. So do deep orange and emerald green. Gold on the border earns its place in any of these, because the room is lit by lamps and gold picks up flame light in a way flat colour cannot.
Leave plain black alone. Leave plain white alone too, which reads as inauspicious for a Lakshmi puja in most South Indian homes even though it is perfectly fine elsewhere in the country. An off-white ground with a strong red or gold border is a different thing and is generally accepted.
Fabric decides whether you enjoy the morning
Varalakshmi Vratham is a seated puja. You will be on the floor, close to a lamp, often fasting, for a long stretch of a South Indian August. Traditional advice says silk, and the reasoning holds up: silk is considered auspicious, and it keeps its shape when you sit.
The practical problem is that a heavy Kanjivaram in August is punishing if you are doing the cooking as well as the puja. Modal and Chanderi both give you the fall and the quiet sheen without the weight. Modal in particular stays put when you move, which matters when you are going back and forth between the kitchen and the kalasham.
One safety note that nobody mentions: keep sequin work away from the lamp. The plastic backing on most sequins scorches, and a loose pallu near an open flame is a genuine risk when you are concentrating on something else.
Hosting versus visiting
If you are hosting, dress for the work you will actually be doing. Something you can cook in, with a pallu you can pin out of the way, in a colour that forgives a turmeric mark. Red and deep pink are forgiving. Pale yellow is not.
If you are visiting, you can go heavier. A textured weave or a strong border reads well when you are sitting, receiving prasadam and leaving within the hour.
Draping for a long puja morning
- Pin the pleats closed a few inches below the waist so they do not fan open when you sit cross-legged.
- Pin the pallu at the shoulder, and again at the waist if you will be near the lamp or the stove.
- Wear a shorter blouse sleeve if you are cooking, a fuller one if you are only sitting.
- Keep bangles on one wrist rather than both. You will be handling the kalasham and the thread.
- Tie the petticoat slightly lower than usual so the pleats sit flat once you are on the floor.
