Care Guide

How to Care for Your Saree

The Care Guide

Treated well, a Koshnika saree lasts a decade. The single most important rule: every saree is dry wash only. Here is how to keep yours looking the way it did on day one.

The Golden Rule

All Koshnika sarees are dry wash only. Natural and semi-natural fibres respond poorly to machine washing, harsh detergents and heat. Dry wash preserves colour, drape and fabric for years.

Care by Fabric

Modal

WashingDry wash only. If hand washing, use cold water and a very mild detergent. Never wring or twist.
DryingLay flat in shade. Never hang wet - Modal stretches under its own weight.
IroningLow heat on reverse side while slightly damp.
StorageCotton bag or muslin wrap. Avoid plastic - fabric needs to breathe.

Tip: Modal softens beautifully with gentle care over time.

Chanderi

WashingDry wash only. Crisp drape and sheen are best preserved by professional dry cleaning.
DryingShade dry flat. Avoid direct sunlight - colours fade faster on Chanderi.
IroningLow-medium heat on reverse with a pressing cloth.
StorageFold along original creases; refold every few months.

Tip: The gold zari border tarnishes with moisture - keep dry at all times.

Tussar Silk

WashingProfessional dry clean only. Natural grain is easily damaged by water.
DryingAir dry in shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
IroningLow heat, reverse side, with a pressing cloth.
StorageWrap in muslin or acid-free tissue; refold every 3 months.

Tip: Change the fold direction every few months - Tussar can crack along permanent folds.

Bamboo Silk

WashingDry wash only. Natural sheen is preserved best with dry cleaning.
DryingLay flat in shade. Dries quickly.
IroningVery low heat while slightly damp - sheen dulls under high heat.
StorageFold neatly in a cotton bag, away from moisture and sun.

Tip: One of the most forgiving fabrics - gentle care keeps it new for years.

Viscose

WashingDry wash only. Viscose loses drape and can shrink if machine washed.
DryingLay flat in shade. Never wring - it distorts easily when wet.
IroningLow heat on reverse while slightly damp; keep the iron moving.
StorageFold along drape lines. Avoid hanging - Viscose stretches.

Tip: For printed Viscose, always iron on the reverse to protect the print.

Self Jacquard

WashingDry wash only. The woven pattern can flatten with water washing.
DryingFlat in shade. Avoid direct sunlight.
IroningLow heat, reverse side, pressing cloth between iron and fabric.
StorageStore flat in muslin. Avoid compression - the weave needs space.

Tip: Steam from a distance refreshes it between wearings without a full dry clean.

Universal Care Rules

  • Never machine wash any Koshnika saree.
  • Never bleach - it destroys natural fibres permanently.
  • Never dry in direct sunlight - UV fades colour and weakens fabric.
  • Refold every 3 months to prevent permanent crease lines.
  • Air out sarees twice a year, even if unworn.
  • When in doubt - dry clean.

Storing Your Saree

  • Fold along the natural drape lines, not random folds.
  • Wrap in muslin or acid-free tissue, never plastic.
  • Place silica gel packets nearby to absorb moisture.
  • Keep away from perfume, deodorant and chemical sprays.
  • Store in a cool, dry, ventilated space.

Tussar Silk Low Reverse side, pressing cloth
Bamboo Silk Very Low Slightly damp

A note on dry wash

It does not mean a dry-clean after every wear. Air it out, fold it carefully, store it well. The less you wash it, the longer it lasts.
