A Madhubani saree carries one of India's oldest visual languages. Madhubani — or Mithila — art is a 2,500-year-old painting tradition from Bihar, built on geometric pattern and nature motifs: fish, birds, lotus, peacock, sun and moon. Once painted on walls and floors at festival time, it now holds a Government of India GI tag.
