For Onam, wear a cream or off-white saree with a gold-toned border. That is the kasavu palette, and in a Kerala home it reads as correct without you needing to explain the choice. Onam 2026 runs from Atham on roughly 16 August to Thiruvonam on Wednesday, 26 August.
Everything after that is about fabric, and about the fact that you will be sitting on the floor for a very long lunch.
Onam 2026 dates, and why they shift
Thiruvonam, the main day, falls on Wednesday 26 August 2026, in the Malayalam month of Chingam. Drik Panchang lists the Thiruvonam nakshatram running from 10:51 PM on 25 August to 12:48 AM on 27 August, which is why the calendar day lands where it does. The ten-day run opens with Atham, and you will see that listed as either 16 or 17 August depending on which panchang you follow.
If your family goes by a specific temple calendar, go by that. Regional panchangs disagree by a day fairly often and neither reading is wrong.
Why cream and gold
Kasavu is the Kerala cream-and-gold combination, traditionally an unbleached cotton with a zari border. The palette is the whole point of it. It holds up in the flat morning light of a sadya, it does not fight with the colours of the pookalam laid out at the door, and it suits everyone regardless of skin tone, which is not true of most festival shades.
One honest note. We do not sell kasavu. Ours are printed sarees in the same cream and ivory family. If you want a true Kerala kasavu, buy one in Kerala from someone who makes them. If what you want is the palette in a fabric that survives an August afternoon, that is a different question, and it is one we can answer.
Fabric matters more than the border in August
Kerala in late August is warm and wet. Heavy silk is the wrong instinct. You want something that breathes, does not cling once the humidity climbs, and does not crease into a road map after two hours on the floor.
Tussar silk in a cream ground is the safest pick. It has a natural slub texture that reads as rich without carrying weight, and it holds its drape through the repeated sitting and standing a sadya involves. Bamboo silk is the other one worth a look: softer, cooler against the skin, falling closer to the body than tussar does.
Skip heavy organza and anything with sequin work. Pure synthetic georgette is the third to avoid, because it traps heat against you in exactly the wrong weather.
What saree to wear for Onam if you do not want cream
Then wear a deep colour with a gold or contrast border. Mustard, forest green, deep maroon and rust all sit correctly in an Onam room. The rule people actually enforce is that you look festive and considered, not that you match one specific shade. Younger guests increasingly wear a cream base with a coloured pallu, which splits the difference neatly.
The one thing to leave in the cupboard is plain black.
How to drape it for a sadya
You will be cross-legged on the floor, eating off a banana leaf, for longer than you expect. Five things help:
- Pin the pleats together about four inches below the waist so they stay closed when you sit down.
- Keep the pallu short enough to clear the ground, and pin it at the shoulder.
- Wear a blouse with sleeves you can lift your arms in. You will be reaching across the leaf.
- Leave the long earrings at home. They swing forward every time you lean over the food.
- Use a petticoat that matches the saree rather than contrasts with it. Cream over a bright petticoat looks wrong the moment you sit.
