Viscose is not automatically sustainable, and it is not automatically bad either. It is a plant fibre made from dissolved wood pulp, so whether it earns the word depends on two things only: where the pulp was logged, and whether the mill recovers the chemicals it uses. Conventional viscose from untraced forest is one of the least responsible fabrics in a wardrobe. Certified closed-loop viscose is one of the better ones.
That gap is enormous, and almost nobody selling you a viscose saree tells you which side of it their cloth sits on. Around 30 percent of global viscose production currently meets basic sustainability standards. The other 70 percent does not. So the useful question is never whether viscose is good or bad as a category. It is which viscose you are holding.
What viscose actually is
Wood is chipped and pulped, usually eucalyptus, beech or pine. The pulp is dissolved in caustic soda and carbon disulfide until it becomes a thick amber liquid, then pushed through a spinneret into an acid bath where it hardens back into filament. That filament is spun into yarn and woven.
So the origin is a plant and the conversion is chemistry. Textile people call it a regenerated cellulose fibre or a semi-synthetic, and it sits in the same family as modal, lyocell and the cloth sold as bamboo silk. Nothing in that description is inherently dirty. Cellulose is renewable and the finished fibre biodegrades. The damage, where there is damage, happens at the two ends of the process.
The first thing that decides it: where the pulp came from
Roughly 200 million trees are felled every year to feed cellulosic textile production. About a third of that wood is traced back to ancient and endangered forest. That single statistic is the strongest argument against viscose, and it has nothing to do with the chemistry.
It is also the part that has improved fastest. Canopy, the forest conservation group, publishes an annual Hot Button Report ranking the world's largest producers on sourcing, transparency and low-impact alternatives. In the 2025 ranking Lenzing and Tangshan Sanyou shared the top position on 34.5 buttons, with Aditya Birla close behind on 34. Jilin Chemical Fiber, Yibin Grace and Xinxiang Chemical Fiber each scored 33.
What separates those mills from the rest is traceability. FSC certification on the dissolving pulp means the wood is tracked to a managed forest rather than bought on an open market where nobody asks. Lenzing now runs a Brazilian mill producing fully FSC-certified dissolving pulp, which is a step beyond the FSC Mix that most of the industry uses.
The second thing: what the mill does with its chemicals
Carbon disulfide is the problem chemical. In an open process it vents, along with hydrogen sulfide and sulfur oxides, and the wastewater carries the rest into whatever river is nearby. This is genuinely harmful, and it is concentrated in a handful of mill towns rather than spread thinly across the world.
A closed-loop process changes the arithmetic completely. It recovers up to 99 percent of the processing chemicals and captures carbon disulfide at rates of 90 to 95 percent, so the solvent goes back into the line instead of into the air. Closed-loop production also runs on roughly half the energy and half the water of the conventional route, and generates about 50 percent fewer emissions.
Water is worth putting a number on. Conventional viscose uses in the region of 30 tonnes of water per tonne of fibre. Branded closed-loop viscose such as Lenzing EcoVero is made with at least 50 percent less water than generic viscose and roughly half the carbon emissions. Lyocell, made with a recoverable solvent rather than carbon disulfide, is cleaner still and is the honest top of this category.

How viscose compares with what else is in your cupboard
Against conventional cotton, viscose uses less water in the field and none of the pesticide load, but cotton does not release carbon disulfide. Neither is clean. Organic cotton beats conventional viscose; certified closed-loop viscose beats conventional cotton.
Against polyester, viscose wins on the thing that lasts longest. Polyester sheds microplastic with every wash and stays in the ground for centuries. Viscose is cellulose and breaks down.
Against silk, the comparison is not really environmental. Mulberry silk has a modest land footprint but requires sericulture, so it is not vegan. What to check before you buy a viscose saree
- Look for a named fibre, not a generic one. EcoVero, Livaeco, Birla Viscose and Tencel all come with traceability behind the name. Unbranded viscose comes with none.
- Ask whether the pulp is FSC certified. A seller who knows the answer is sourcing deliberately. A seller who has never been asked will say so.
- Treat lyocell as the upgrade. If a listing offers lyocell or Tencel at a modest premium, that premium is buying a genuinely cleaner process.
- Be sceptical of the word bamboo on its own. Bamboo silk is bamboo pulp put through the same viscose chemistry. The crop is low-input, the conversion is not.
- Count how long you will wear it. A saree worn thirty times has a better footprint than a certified one worn twice. This is the factor with the largest effect and the least marketing behind it.
Where we stand on this
Our viscose is conventional mill viscose. It is not lyocell, and we are not going to imply we hold a closed-loop certificate we do not hold. At the price these sarees sell for, anyone claiming otherwise is telling you a story.
What we can state plainly is the rest of it. No silkworm is farmed for any of them, the fabric is plant-derived cellulose that will biodegrade, the prints are machine-printed onto the cloth, and every saree is 5.5 metres plus a 0.8 metre unstitched blouse piece. If sourcing certification is the thing you care most about, buy lyocell from a mill that publishes its Canopy ranking. If you want a vegan saree you will wear often at a price that lets you wear it often, viscose is a reasonable answer.
