Handwoven and hand-painted sarees last for years when you treat them gently. Follow these simple rules to keep colour, drape and artwork looking new.
Washing
- Dry clean only. This is the safest choice for Tussar, Chanderi and Madhubani hand-painted sarees.
- Never machine wash or hard-scrub, which dulls natural dyes and flattens the weave.
- If a spill happens, blot gently with a dry cloth and visit the dry cleaner soon.
Drying
- Dry in shade, never in direct sun, which fades natural colours.
- Avoid wringing; let the fabric hang and settle.
Storing
- Wrap in a cotton or muslin cloth, not plastic, so the fabric can breathe.
- Refold along a different line every few months to prevent permanent creases.
- Keep neem leaves or a sachet nearby to deter moths.
Ironing
- Use a medium iron with a cotton cloth between the iron and the saree, especially over painted areas.
Care done right protects both the fabric and the artisan's work. For weave-specific notes see our care guide, or explore Tussar and Chanderi sarees.
